Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMA)

Switzerland for the Oceans' mission is to raise awareness and support for global marine conservation projects. From September 2024 to January 2025, all donations to Switzerland for the Oceans will support Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) around the world. Our efforts are coordinated in partnership with the Water Revolution Foundation in raising EUR 350’000 for The International Union for Conservation of Nature IUCN IMMA programme, to support the mapping of the world's oceans to inform science-based marine policies for marine mammal protected areas.
IMMA identifies and designates critical habitats for marine mammals worldwide. The IMMA programme provides scientifically validated data on key areas that are crucial to the survival and well-being of marine mammals. By mapping these areas, the IMMA programme helps guide policies, inform management strategies and promote the protection of marine biodiversity, ensuring sustainable use of marine resources and conservation of vital marine ecosystems. Join our free webinars on 10 September and 26 November 2024 to learn more about the IMMA programme from the founding marine scientist of the IUCN IMMA Programme.
Donations can be made in Euros or Swiss Francs via bank transfer (preferred), credit card, Twint, or PostFinance. Letters of Intent to donate a minimum of 2,000 Euros or Swiss Francs are encouraged from persons, organisations, and foundations, representatives of whom will be invited to an informal lunch on Zurich Bahnhofstrasse on 28 January 2025 with the IMMA programme leadership. For large donations and donor certificate requests, please write to contact(at)switzerlandfortheoceans.org
