Switzerland for the Oceans is staging a one-day 100km ride to help the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation’s project to protect the Mediterranean monk seal.

The Mediterranean monk seal is one of the world’s most endangered species. Commercial hunting and, in the 20th century, eradication by fishermen and the pollution of its natural habitat have left the animal on the verge of extinction, with an estimated 500 in the wild. However, a conservation project in the Aegean set up by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation (FPA2) has produced promising results and more funding is needed if its work is to continue.

In 2017, one client raised our attention about the negative impact on the environment of the plastic cups we were offering in our studio. This client was also a volunteering member of Switzerland for the Oceans, a nonprofit organisation that helps to preserve the vitality of the oceans.

One of the first initiatives we decided was to develop an environmental friendly Booster bottle to replace the plastic cups in our studios and to offer the proceeds from the bottle sales (CHF 2.5 per bottle) to Switzerland for Oceans.

In the first 3 months, we sold 73 bottles and were able to donate CHF183.

Now in its third year, the London to Monaco bike ride will kick off on September 19, 2018 with dozens of amateur cyclists testing themselves on a 1,400km route ending in Monaco on September 25 to coincide with the Monaco Yacht Show. Organised by the Blue Marine Foundation to raise awareness and financial support for projects including marine reserves in the Ascension Islands and the South Atlantic island of St Helena and introducing sustainable fishing in the Aeolian Islands, cyclists opt to either take part in one of four stages or complete the whole gruelling route with over £570,000 raised since its inauguration in 2016.

Charles Barber gründete vor knapp einem Jahr den Verein «Switzerland for the Oceans» mit dem Ziel, Projekte zu unterstützen, die sich für den Schutz der Weltmeere einsetzen. Dabei ist Barber überzeugt, dass den Schweizerinnen und Schweizern die Bedeutung gesunder Meere für eine intakte Welt bewusst ist.

Ein Schweizer Verein, der sich für den Schutz der Meere einsetzt, klingt etwas befremdlich. Als Binnenland interessiert sich die Schweiz eher für Berge als für Salzwasser. Doch Charles Barber, der Gründer von «Switzerland for the Oceans», ist anderer Meinung. Er nimmt an, dass der Wille hierzulande durchaus verbreitet ist, die Rettung der Ozeane im persönlichen Spendenbudget zu berücksichtigen. «Die Schweizer Bevölkerung ist mehr mit dem Meer verbunden, als man gemeinhin annimmt.

Als Gemeinderatspräsident des Amtsjahres 2016/17 und Stadtratskandidat für die Wahlen im März 2018 habe ich zahlreiche Auftritte. Einer war am Sonntag, 17. September, als ich die Grussbotschaft für die Velotour Zürich nach Monaco von «Switzerland for the Oceans» für einen sinnvollen Zweck machen durfte. Wussten Sie, dass im Jahr 2050 gewichtsmässig mehr Plastik als Fische in den Meeren zu erwarten ist? Deshalb setzt sich «Switzerland for the Oceans» u.a. für die Reduzierung des Plastikmülls in den Weltmeeren ein. Als begeisterter Velofahrer fuhr ich in der ersten Etappe von rund 100 Kilometern über Rapperswil nach Luzern gleich mit.

Was hat Velofahren mit Segeln zu tun? So einiges. Sowohl beim Bike wie beim Segelschiff handelt es sich um zwei umweltverträgliche Fortbewegungsmittel. Velofahren wie Segeln finden beide in der freien Natur statt. Naja, wenn auch das eine auf ausschliesslich flachem Terrain. Bei beiden spürt man je nach Geschwindigkeit mehr oder weniger Fahrtwind im Gesicht. Und den meisten Velofahrern wie Seglern ist ein umweltbewusstes Verhalten wichtig, damit sie ihre Sportart auch noch in vielen Jahren ausüben können. Und genau an dieser Stelle kommt der Verein „Switzerland for the Oceans“ mit ihrem Fundraising-Projekt „Zurich to Monaco Cycle Ride“ ins Spiel.

August folgte nun «Switzerland for the Oceans» ihren Spuren in Gstaad, um die neu gegründete Organisation, die zum Schutz und Wohlergehen der Ozeane gegründet wurde, zu präsentieren.

Yachtclub, der von seinem Patron H.M. König Constantine «... als ein einzigartiger globaler Yachtclub weg von Wasser, anstatt eines anderen Yachtclubs am Wasser» bezeichnet wird. Trotz grossem Respekt bei diesem Gastredner Event war es für «Switzerland for the Oceans» wichtig, die Geschichte zum

Charles Barber aus Wald unternahm Ende September eine Bike-Challenge von London nach Monaco für einen guten Zweck. Er plant, 2017 selbst eine Velotour zu organisieren. Der Start soll in Wald sein.
«Es war eine grossartige Erfahrung für mich. Ich habe viele Leute kennengelernt, bin sportlich sehr fit geworden und habe gleichzeitig dazu beigetragen, die Ozeane zu schützen», sagt Charles Barber. Er erinnert sich gerne an die Bike-Challenge zurück, die er Ende September mit rund 70 anderen Teilnehmern aus aller Welt absolviert hat.

The cyclists are raising money for the Blue Marine Foundation as part of Winch Design's 30th anniversary celebrations.

Simon Le Bon, environmentalist and lead singer of Duran Duran was there at the start line at the Tower of London to see them off. “The sea is a beautiful thing,” he said. “I think we all grew up thinking it was perfect and untouchable and would always exist, but we know that there’s a disaster unfolding. Over-fishing has caused a terrible crisis. Now is the time to do something. The London to Monaco Bike Challenge will not only raise much-needed funds for BLUE’s conservation work, it’ll also raise awareness of the crisis our oceans are facing.”

A sea of blue swept across the palace gates at 11:30 Tuesday morning, as a few dozen cyclists arrived on the last leg of the London to Monaco Cycle for charity, which started out on Sunday, September 18. As most of the riders are involved in the yachting industry, the arrival coincides with the launch of the Monaco Yacht Show Wednesday.
